It isn’t until her cousin comes to visit that she notices the green light across the lake, the one that matches the one on her dock. Could it be? Has Gatsby somehow been found innocent and come back for her? Is he still the same man? And… is she the same woman? Does she still believe in the green light? Beautiful Little Freaks is a chilling, seductive retelling of The Great Gatsby, containing forbidden romance, vengeance, and the twisted paths we take to reclaim what we’ve lost.
Beautiful Little Freaks is a dark romance retelling. It features one couple, and has a HEA.
The Good:
* I feel like this is one of the more romantic dark romances that I’ve read. While the plotline itself is dark, the romance itself didn’t come off as all that dark to me. Maybe I’m just becoming desensitized due to all of the completely unhinged stuff that I’ve read. That could be it too.
* I loved all of the Gatsby references and parallels and the storyline is engaging.
* The characters are impeccably written, I couldn’t get enough of them.
The Meh:
* At 530 pages, it’s one of the longest dark romances I’ve ever read. I wouldn’t have minded editing some of the minor scenes out
Bottom Line:
A must for a Gatsby fan and perfect for an intro to dark romance. If you’re curious about dark romance and want to try dipping your toe in but don’t want anything too twisted, this would be a book that I would recommend. It’s got an engaging plotline, a familiar story/characters, and it doesn’t go too dark. As my first Tylor Paige read, I can confidently say that I would gladly come back for seconds.
