The Check Down by Brandy Pelletier

Rating: 4/5

Spice: 3/5

Primary Genre: Sports Romance

Trigger Warnings: Situational depression, cheating (not by either MC) and a brief mention of a loved one’s passing.

Plot 4/5:

Girl crashes boy’s car, boy saves girl from horrible relationship. Boy is an NFL superstar, BTW. Griffin and Brynn are new besties. Griffin is determined to show Brynn the magic of Memphis as she hasn’t ever acclimated to her new city even though she’s lived there for years. Will Griffin be able to keep things friendly so he can focus on his football season?

The Good:

* Brandy’s writing was a joy to read. Her stories and characters are top notch. I know that this is a “Lacey Brothers” series but really, she could turn it into a Memphis Blues series and marry off the whole damn time and I’d happily read along.

* The parent characters are a riot, especially Brynn’s. They’re quirky, unique and hilarious. They also serve as great comic relief.

* The teammate characters are also well written and flow into the story naturally with their own personalities and quirks. The younger guys were pretty entertaining to read about.

* The love story was on point. Griffin’s notes app note, the dragons, it was all too cute.

The Meh:

* I feel like this is always my meh but I really wish Brynn’s ex had gotten a taste of his own medicine but like I always say, that’s just a character flaw of mine. I love revenge ;)

Bottom Line:

When I tell you I’m not a sports romance girl, I mean it. However, I freaking loved this book. The writing was excellent, the story was well thought out and crafted. The characters are endearing. You’ll feel like you’re getting a little taste of the Memphis experience. Brynn and Griffin were a blast to read about and I was feeling annoyed whenever I had to put the book down to do something else. I had a great time with this read, highly recommend!
